SMA wins competition to design a Rum Distillery and Factory in the Caribbean

It has officially been announced that Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos is the winner of the invited international competition for the architectural design of a factory and tourism complex for one of the longest-established rum brands in the Caribbean.

Having been invited to participate in the international design competition alongside leading names in the field, Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos has been declared the winning design of a large touristic and industrial complex for a major rum brand on a Caribbean island.

With an overall concept guided by colonial Cuban architecture, SMA presented a schematic proposal that incorporates round arches, courtyards and colonnades—all architectural elements characteristic of the locality—with a contemporary design that involves four different experiences of the complex: a culinary experience, a cultural experience, a casks experience and a solera experience.
